One Word Film Project

     Working in a group of 3, the goal of our One Word Film Project was to tell a story in a 60-90 second clip with no audio. The story would be centered on one word that our teacher assigned to us. The project had to convey that word as the main theme.

    Once assigned our word, pessimistic, we made a brainstorming sheet to create a shot list of things we would like to capture. This helped us create the general storyline for our film, and plan our the shots inside of it. After we made our brainstorming sheet, we created a storyboard for our shots. This allowed us to visualize the shots we described on our brainstorming sheet, since the brainstorming sheet was only words. The storyboard also allowed us to see the shot types and the core scenes of the film. We used Adobe Express to combine and edit our clips. It allowed us to make all necessary adjustments and add transitions as necessary.

In the end, I think we handled the film making process very well and am very happy with the outcome of the project. The transitions and effects added suit the film quite well and the final piece seems very well put together. Since we got a hard word, the only thing I would change would be to add extra shots to clarify our word; however, I am not sure how we would do that.

Media Text Essay Review

 1. In the sample essay, the author did various things right and wrong. One thing they did right was how they handled their introduction. It includes the title and purpose while being brief. Another thing they did right was avoiding listing their elements without explaining. They connected everything they mentioned back to the purpose of the excerpt. Lastly, they correctly identified each of the shot types used in the excerpt; however, they may not have explained them correctly. This leads us into three things they did wrong. To begin with, the author only had 3 body paragraphs which is unfitting for the amount of scenes and content in the excerpt. They also had incorrect analysis of some of the scenes that weren’t properly explained in their micro analysis. Lastly, the author utilized improper grammar and vocabulary which can be seen throughout the entirety of the excerpt.

2. Three sentences in the second sample that depict the authors macro analysis are “Through the use of primarily close up’s and extreme close up’s, a sense of futility is developed.” Another is “This infers that everyday life continues, despite the violent acts that just took place inside the bathroom.” Lastly, “The final closeup of the newspaper , a method used for documenting the history of our lives, further implies that this death is one in a sea of many” All of these quotes support the macro analysis that says even though the woman is tragically dying, life will continue on without her.

3. If given the chance I would like to improve my fourth paragraph, which talks about the attack on the woman. I believe I misinterpreted various elements of the scene such as the shower head and the woman’s last moments sliding down the wall. I would also add in the macro analysis of the shower head in this paragraph.

First Preliminary Project

In my first preliminary project, I was tasked with telling a story through 15 still pictures using common school supplies found in my backpack.

Since we were to work in pairs of 2, me and my partner first started by generating story ideas. We thought out a storyboard and what each of the 15 shots would consist of. Part of our criteria was to use a multitude of shot types and angles while paying careful detail to the composition of the shot. We made a table of what shot types and angles each of the 15 shots would use. Various shot types were mandatory for the assignment. After, we began to make the characters for our story. We used multiple different water bottles in our project, varying in size to show age, material to distinct characters, and color themes to reflect their personalities. Upon completion of all necessary props for our story, we began to take pictures of the water bottles for our story. It started with 2 adult water bottles in a hospital who gave birth to a baby water bottle, the main character of the story. It then detailed his life, showing him age up until high school. The story ends with a conflict where the water bottle ends up getting bullied by his fellow classmate, and ends up in tears.

In our story, I think we did especially well at showcasing the various shot types and angles given the task at hand. We adjusted to the fact that the camera subjects were water bottles, and still produced the correct shots. Personal ally, I believe we could have had a better structured story that used more detailed shots. They reflect a story in our work, but it feels rushed and lacks some explanation for some scenes.
